2016 Annual Meeting May 6-8, Richmond, VA

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Members and Friends of the Ulysses S. Grant Association,

Please join us for the 53rd annual meeting of the Ulysses S. Grant Association, which will be held in Richmond and Pamplin Park, Virginia on May 6-8, 2016. Pamplin Park is a marvelous site which includes a fabulous museum and the entrenchments where U.S. Grant established a siege of Petersburg at the end of the Civil War. We are looking forward to an exciting weekend of programs, tours, and speakers. Our host will be Will Green, noted historian and director of the Park. Featured speakers will be Will Green and Ron White. Ron, who is a USGA member, will have his new Grant biography available for purchase and signing. Back by popular demand, Meg will again have Grant merchandise available for purchase.

Registration will open Friday afternoon, May 6, from 1-4 p.m. at our headquarters hotel. A printed guide will be available to those who would like to do some sightseeing on their own. Friday evening, we will attend a reception and dinner at our headquarters hotel in Richmond. (Busses will be available to take us to all the annual meeting’s formal sessions and dinners.) On Friday during the morning, time to be determined, the BOARD OF DIRECTORS will participate in a retreat for the purposes of future planning.

Saturday’s exciting agenda will include a driving tour of the famous Monument Avenue on our way to tour the Pamplin Park Civil War Museum. We will have lunch at the Park and also tour the entrenchments that Grant faced on his way to capturing Petersburg and Richmond. Busses will then return, around 2 PM, to the headquarters hotel for those who do not wish to visit the famous Tredegar Civil War Museum in Richmond. Busses will return from the Civil War Museum to the hotel in time to allow everyone to get ready for dinner at the Capital Ale House, only a few blocks from our hotel.

Sunday morning, the staff of the USGA will present a panel discussing the preparation of the scholarly edition of the Grant Memoirs to be published in 2017 by Harvard University Press. This will be followed by the USGA General Membership Meeting, which will conclude the annual meeting’s events by 11 AM.

Our hotel headquarters will be the Omni Richmond Hotel, 100 South 12th Street, Richmond. The hotel is 15 miles from the Richmond International Airport. The Ulysses S. Grant Association has a block of rooms reserved at a special group rate of $129.00 plus tax which can only be accessed online Here . There is plenty of ground transportation from the airport to the hotel, although no hotel shuttle. (Parking is available at the hotel at the rate of $22.00 per day.)

You can register for the meeting on our website: www.usgrantlibrary.org. You may pay online with a credit card or by mail to Meg Henderson, USGA, P.O. Box 5408, Mississippi State, MS 39762.
