Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Members,
I know many of you have been anxious to know about what to expect at our annual meeting this year. Thanks for your patience as we have been arranging the details of what is shaping up to be a very special meeting. Our theme this year will be “Grant and the Presidency,” and our meeting location in Washington D.C. Our accommodations will be at the historic Willard Hotel, where Grant stayed during his 1864 visit to the capital city.
Our meeting itinerary will be based around the Lafayette Square area. Friday night's reception and dinner will take place on a rooftop terrace overlooking the Navy memorial and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Saturday's program will begin with a tour of the Main Treasury Department, the site of Grant's first inaugural ball. The tour is being organized through the offices of Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and is a very unique opportunity that few private citizens get to experience.
The program continues on Saturday at the Decatur House, which is home to the Center for White House History and is managed by the White House Historical Association. We will enjoy lunch and talks by Candace Shy Hooper and Ulysses Grant Dietz, followed by tours of the house. A reception and dinner will follow, and our evening will be capped with an address by Dr. Charles Calhoun.
The meeting will conclude on Sunday with breakfast and our membership meeting. An optional walking tour of Ulysses S. Grant's presidential neighborhood will follow.
The cost of registration for members is $475 if paying by check (please note that payments done by credit card via PayPal will incur an additional 4.5% processing charge). Please make the checks out to the Ulysses S. Grant Association and mail them to:
U.S. Grant Presidential Library
PO Box 5408
395 Hardy Rd.
Mississippi State, MS. 39762
We realize that this is quite an increase from our fees from past conferences, but the cost reflects both our expensive location and rising food prices.
Meals provided with registration include: Friday Dinner, Saturday lunch, a reception with beer and wine, dinner, and Sunday breakfast.
*please note that attendees will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the airport.
*We have intentionally kept our activities within a tight radius of the hotel and anticipate that during the day most attendees will be able to walk between the hotel and sites on Saturday. We will have shuttles to and from the Friday and Saturday evening activities only.
*We must have the First, Middle, and Last names of those attendees who plan to tour the Treasury in to Senator Brown's office by March 1. The final date to register if you plan to go on the tour is February 28.
